OK solved. My problem was to find out how to let my editor know I wanted to save in utf-8. (In my version of emacs it's Mule=>Set coding systems for saving this buffer. Then manually enter utf-8. Seems to do the trick.)

OK I found the answer here : http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/gettext.html#Binaries
It's msgfmt.
Next glitch--it doesn't like my octets!

$ msgfmt fr_FR.po
fr_FR.po:51:60: séquence multi-octets invalide

Thanks a lot for posting these tips on your site. After trying to get along with Poedit on the mac (and in Windows through Parallels as well) I gave up, and turned to the Terminal.

This is just what I needed to get started. Thanks again!
